Mindful Horsemanship

Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think. Joy follows a pure
thought like a shadow that never leaves.
- Gautama Buddha

Mindfulness, as described by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, is “awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment.”

Ruth King, founder of the Mindful of Race Institute adds: “Mindfulness meditation is not a quick fix, nor is it about denying what we feel by replacing negative experiences with positive ones. It’s about embracing the truth of the moment and discovering the liberating power and beauty of pure awareness. It’s simple and life changing.”

For decades, scientists have been studying the changes in the brain, body and our psychology when mindfulness is used. The benefits of mindfulness for equestrians and horse lovers are plenty.

Brain Changes

Mindfulness positively impacts areas of the brain that regulate emotion, sensory processing, memory and attention by increasing the gray matter in those brain regions.

Self-Awareness

Mindfulness enhances self-awareness
and deepens our understanding of our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and responses.

Self-Influence

Mindfulness improves body awareness, emotional regulation
and self-influence.

Relaxation

Mindfulness regulates the body’s stress response and lowers stress levels.

Directed Mind

Mindfulness increases focus and attentional control.

Imagine if you could regulate your stress response, increase your focus and your body awareness and present your horse with a clear picture of what you are asking. Your collaboration would significantly improve.

And what if your internal experience and external expression were congruent? Trust and safety would deepen.

Mindfulness, combined with other heart-based strategies, can take your relationship with your horse to a new level!

Mindful horsemanship coaching can be provided virtually, at your barn, or at a private ranch in Malibu, California.
